No Word for Art - Opening Reception 7PM

For the Onkwehon:we the concept of art is not defined. Creative endeavours were a part of life and those who created, shared their gifts for the pleasure of all. No Word for Art is an exhibition highlighting the artistic achievements of Santee Smith, an accomplished dancer, choreographer, performer and pottery designer, and one of Six Nations finest creative artists.

Santee Tekaronhiáhkhwa Smith is a mother, performer, award-winning producer and choreographer, Konkwehón:we from the Kenien'kehá:ka Nation, Turtle Clan from Six Nations.  Santee trained at Canada’s National Ballet School, holds Kinesiology and Psychology degrees from McMaster University and a M.A in Dance from York University.  Smith produced her first choreography, Kaha:wi in 2004 and is the founding Artistic Director of Kaha:wi Dance Theatre.  A leader in dance, she has created over 15 choreographies and performs internationally.  Santee is the recipient of numerous awards including a Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Choreography for Susuriwka – Willow Bridge.  

Join us as we celebrate the creativity of one of Six Nations most prolific artists, Santee Smith.

January 20th at 7pm an exhibition of Smith’s work will be showcased in the exhibition No Word for Art. The exhibition will showcase items from Smiths career as a dancer, choreographer, and pottery designer. The exhibition opening will be accompanied by the music of Lacey Hill and light refreshments will be served.
