A Brief History
The Woodland Cultural Centre is located on the Six Nations Reserve in Brantford, Ontario and was established in
October 1972. Formerly the Mohawk Institute, a residential school for Indian children, the Centre is a testament
to the strength, distinctiveness, and richness of our unique heritage and contemporary culture.
The Woodland Cultural Centre is a multi-faceted site which includes space in the museum building for a museum in
the permanent gallery which incorporates the history and culture of the Iroquoian and Algonkian people through a
chronological timeline. As well the museum building also has three other gallery spaces allocated for art or
historical exhibitions that change on a 3-month cycle.
The site also includes the main building which used to be
the Mohawk Institute a residential school that was built in 1904, which now houses the administration, resource
library, maintenance and language departments. The site, although located within the City of Brantford, is
actually situated on the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory. The grounds are utilized over the year for
many of the Centre’s special events, especially when installing the snow track for the Snowsnake Tournament or for
our outdoor exhibition space where many outdoor installations are displayed.
